Un techo para mi País - Nicaragua

In an election held at the beginning of October, the student body chose to award the proceeds of this year’s ball to "Un techo para mi País - Nicaragua“

"Un techo para mi País" is a non-profit organisation ran by university students and young professionals, active in nineteen Latin-American countries, and aims at reducing poverty in the region. The organisation seeks to improve the quality of life of people living in poverty and works with them in three phases. During the first phase, "Un techo para mi País" builds transitional houses providing a shelter and security to the inhabitants. Throughout the second phase, the volunteers work with the communities on implementing social inclusion programmes, focusing among others on education, health care, microfinance, legal aid and cultural education. These programmes aim to provide the people with tools to develop sustainable communities with elected representatives. The third phase consists in securing support for definitive housing.

"Un techo para mi País" is active in Nicaragua since 2008, and has since built 871 houses. The country has a high level of poverty. 61.9% of the population lives in poverty. In 2012, the organisation wants to build 450 houses and implement the social inclusion programmes.

In 1754 the Empress Maria Theresa founded the Oriental Academy to train young men for the diplomatic service of the Habsburg monarchy. Out of the Oriental Academy evolved first the Consular Academy and in 1964 the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna, which in 1996 was granted the status of an independent public training institution.

Today the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna is a renowned postgraduate institution, preparing its students from all over the world for international careers in diplomacy, politics, and business.

The Charity Ball takes place on the premises of the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna.
