Paul Valéry wrote, “The trouble with our times is that the future is not what it used to be.”

With the European Union facing both economic and political crisis, high youth unemployment rates, and little progress in reaching global environmental targets, Europe finds itself at a moment of self-examination. Will the supranational state become more or less integrated? Are there common and actionable environmental goals?  What role will the youth of today play in building a new Europe, and what is their vision?  The aim of this conference is not to predict the future per se, but to explore the complimentary and contradictory interpretations of European values today and where they are leading us.

Panel Questions:

1. “If we want everything to stay the same, everything must change”: How must the governance of the EU be altered to equip Europe, internally and in the global scene, for the challenges of the future?

2. Across the continent in the last two years people have protested at having to pay for government failures. Can the financial and democratic structures of Europe hold the trust and respond to the demands of a disillusioned and polarizing electorate?

3. How far can a fragile and economically outstripped Europe continue to prioritize environmental protection and remain competitive? What would a genuinely sustainable future look like for our generation?

Proceeds from the Convention will go to Un techo para mi Pais

Un techo para mi País is an non-profit organisation established in 2001, and has Logo un techo para mi paissince then established chapters in other 18 countries in Latin America. Un Techo para mi País (UTPMP) strives to improve the quality of life of impoverished families through the construction of transitional houses and the implementation of social inclusion programs. UTPMP denounces the precarious reality of the slums in which millions of people live in Latin America and works to involve the general public in the building of a more united, inclusive, poverty-free continent.

This NGO is run and lead by university students and young professionals between the ages of 17 and 27 years that fill the ranks of the organisation as either permanent volunteers, or as ad-hoc volunteers, providing additional work force for the construction of transitional houses, social inclusion work and fundraising campaigns.
