ETIA Programme Graduation Ceremony & ARA Best Study Award

On 2 July 2018 the graduation ceremony for the postgraduate programme "Environmental Technology and International Affairs" (ETIA), a cooperation initiative between the Diplomatische Akademie Wien – Vienna School of International Studies (DA) and the TU Wien (TU), took place in the Festsaal of the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna. Nineteen students from six countries representing three continents participated in the MSc programme this year.

"It seems surprising at first glance that the DA offers a technical programme. However, ecological issues do not stop at borders but are international ones. This puts increasing demands on decision-makers, who require a broad knowledge and understanding of the political, legal, economic and technical issues involved. The DA and the TU were the first academic institutions in Europe to respond to this challenge with the ETIA programme", Ambassador Emil Brix, Director of the Diplomatische Akademie Wien, pointed out. "In our complex world interdisciplinarity is imperative for tackling global environmental phenomena, and the alumni of this programme are generalists in the best sense of the word", Brix added.

Bob Martens, Dean of Academic Affairs for Continuing Education at TU Wien highlighted the cordial cooperation between the two institutions. As unique characteristics he emphasised the "international family" and small cohorts which have enabled the creation of an excellent network, as well as the "female dominance" of the programme – the latter being a very positive addition to the programmes of the Continuing Education Center of TU Wien.

In the course of the graduation ceremony the "ARA Best Study Award", which awards total prize money of 20,000 euros, was granted for the ninth time to the students with the best academic performances. ARA Altstoff Recycling Austria AG is Austria's leading EU packaging compliance scheme and a non-profit company, using the revenues from compliance fees to organise and finance the collection and recovery of packaging waste in Austria. Christoph Scharff, CEO of ARA, complimented this year's ETIA graduates on their stunning achievements. The ARA Best Study Award 2018 prize money was distributed between four students who all graduated with equally brilliant results: Ansgar Lars Fellendorf, Christina Kauer, Justina Rauch and Nikolas Simon.

The Diplomatische Akademie Wien – Vienna School of International Studies and the Continuing Education Center of TU Wien are delighted to extend their congratulations to the award winners and all the alumni.
